Harry Maguire’s World Record Transfer Makes Virgil van Dijk To Agree To Huge New Liverpool Contract

Virgil van Dijk has reportedly agreed a bumper new deal with Liverpool – and it’s all thanks to Manchester United.

The Red Devils broke the record previously held by Van Dijk to make Harry Maguire the world’s most expensive defender earlier this summer.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Englishman’s £80million move to Old Trafford has resulted in a massive wage hike for Liverpool’s star centre-back.

Van Dijk is currently understood to be earning £125,000-a-week and the fresh terms, set to keep him at Anfield until 2025, will reportedly push him nearer the £200,000-a-week mark.

The Mirror claims negotiations had been ongoing before Maguire joined Man United, but the transfer gave Van Dijk’s representatives the target for what they needed.

The 28-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Southampton for £75million in January 2018, beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to the European Footballer of the Year award last month.

Van Dijk was also voted PFA Player of the Year and helped Liverpool keep 22 clean sheets in the Premier League, the most in Europe’s six top leagues.

His side were narrowly pipped to the title by Manchester City, but he was instrumental in helping the Reds win a sixth Champions League title, and he finished runner-up to Portugal in the inaugural UEFA Nations League.
