Increase In Racism Is A Result Of Fans’ Stupidity – Yaya Touré

Former Manchester City player, Yaya Touré has blamed increase of racism in recent times on fans being “more stupid than before”.

Several disturbing cases of racism in football have been reported in recent times most especially in Italian Serie A.

Cagliari fans made monkey chants at Romelu Lukaku earlier in the season with Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport criticised for the headline ‘Black Friday’ alongside images of Roma defender Chris Smalling and Lukaku.

Bulgaria fans also made monkey chants and Nazi salute against England players during Euro2020 qualifiers in October which resulted to both Union President and coach being sacked.

Racism reared its ugly head in the top flight match between Manchester City and Manchester United where a man was arrested for racial abuse on United players.

“I’ve had a chat with Fifa because this is something very important,” said Touré.

“It will be difficult because the way to win this case is going to be long.

“Fans, people, now are more stupid than before.”

“Of course it is shocking because we are in 2019. In 2020, 2025 we have the kids coming through – what are we going to do? You can’t continue like that.” The former Ivory Coast international added.

Touré’s former team mate, Mario Balotelli who was also a victim of racism during Brescia clash against Verona last month, called Verona racists “small-minded” and “imbeciles”.
