Match Fixing: Clemens Westerhof Defeats Bonfrere Jo In Court

Former Super Eagles coach Clemens Westerhof has won a character defamation case filed against his former technical adviser of the team Johannes Bonfere.

Recall that FrujuSports had reported that Bonfrere had accused his former boss of match fixing the 1994 World Cup where Nigeria lost 2-1 to Italy in their second round match in the competition.

Bonfrere was quoted by the media of accusing Westerhof of selling the game for $100,000.

FrujuSport also reported that Westerhof denied the allegation calling Bonfrere a liar and threatened to sue.

The Dutchman made good on his threat and sued, praying the court to make Bonfrere prove his allegation or go to jail and pay a heavy fine as damages for defaming his good name.

The Rechtbank Gelderland Hight Court, Arnhem on Tuesday  found Bonfrere Jo, who became Super Eagles coach after Westerhof left, guilty as charged, ruling that his allegations were incorrect.

Bonfrere was ordered to apologise in a paid advert to be published in a Nigerian newspaper.

The court will also determine more damages to be paid by Bonfrere.
