Mikel Obi Open To Return To England

Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has admitted that he is open to return to England.

The 33-year-old is currently without any club having left Turkish side Trabzonspor by mutual consent in March, according to earlier reports from FrujuSports.

“Yes, there are interested clubs and England is a strong possibility and why not,” Mikel told BBC Sport Africa.

“We are currently in talks with clubs and there is absolutely no hurry. I can only wait to see what happens.”

The former Chelsea player has also refused to deny or confirm a possible move to Stoke City or newly promoted West Bromwich Albion.

Obi has a very successful career but achieved most success in Chelsea having made 249 Premier League appearances in an 11-year spell which ended in 2017.

He has won two league titles, three FA Cups and the Europa League in 2013. He also played for Chinese side Tianjin TEDA and had a brief spell at Middlesbrough in the Championship during the 2018/19 campaign, featuring 19 times and scoring once.

The former Nigeria international was successful at the international level as well having won a total of 89 caps for the country.

These include  a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and also captained his team to a third place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt before announcing his retirement last year.
