Barcelona Wanted To Replace Suarez With Osimhen – Calenda

A member of Victor Osimhen’s management team Roberto Calenda has revealed that Barcelona had wanted to replace outgoing Luis Suarez with the Nigerian striker.

Osimhen, who was previously linked to top clubs Barcelona, Liverpool and Tottenham, moved to Serie A side Napoli from French side, Lille ahead of the 2020/21 season.

Barça had informed Suarez, who is one of the world’s best strikers, that his contract at the club has been terminated.

The La Liga giants also offered their senior players for sale except Messi who reportedly wants to leave as well.

However, Napoli seemed more serious to sign Osimhen and he did in an €80million deal, making him the most expensive Nigerian player.

“I usually never talk about these things, out of respect for professionalism and the club. It is right that Napoli say things as they went, they are the main players,” Calenda said on Goal.

“I can say that it was a well-conducted negotiation by the parties, we started from a distance. The signing took place with constant communication and we were good at keeping track of it.

“[It was a] difficult operation, Tottenham and Liverpool wanted Osimhen until the end, even Barcelona initially wanted him instead of Suarez. Napoli, however, did everything. They wanted him and took him.”

Osimhen has scored four goals for Nigeria on the international level.

He also marked absent outstanding Napoli debut by scoring a hat-trick and also provided an assist in an 11-0 mauling of L’Aquila at the Abruzzo training camp in Castel di Sangro last week Friday.
