US Open 2020: Record-Equalling Serena Williams Beats Kristie Ahn In Straight Sets

Serena Williams sought a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title with a dominant 7-5 6-3 win over fellow American Kristie Ahn.

The The 38-year-old recovered after a break down in both sets to win in one and half hours in pursuit of Margaret Court’s Grand Slam tally.

“I was really happy with how I fought for every point,” she said.

“No matter how I was playing, I just had to get my Serena focus back so that was what I was working on today.”

But her sister Venus Williams will not join her in the next round as the 40-year-old lost 6-3 7-5 to Czech 20th seed Karolina Muchova.

It is the first time Venus will be exiting after an opening round in her home Grand Slam.

In other news, Andy Murray came from behind to stun Yoshihito Nishioka in the men’s category.

The 33-year-old came from two sets and a break down against the Japanese to win 4-6 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.

This is Murray’s come back game after a career-saving hip surgery as he last featured in 2019 Australian Open.
