12 Interesting Facts Ahead Of Nigeria Vs Sierra Leone 2021 AFCON Qualifier

Nigeria hosts Sierra Leone in matchday three of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier home clash on Friday.

The Super Eagles already top Group L with six points after defeating Lesotho and Republic of Benin in earlier matches and are hoping to beat Leone Stars to edge closer to qualifying for Cameroon 2021.

Here are interesting facts we need to know ahead of Eagles vs Leone clash later today:

  1. Nigeria hosted Sierra Leone first ever international match in 1949 in which the Leone Stars lost 2-0.

2. Nigeria has never conceded a goal to Sierra Leone at home in all matches so far.

3. Sierra Leone has never defeated Nigeria both home and away in all matches so far.

4. Sierra Leone biggest football achievement was becoming two-time champions of the Amílcar Cabral Cup (1993 and 1995).

5. Sierra Leone qualified for Africa Cup of Nations only twice in 1994 and 1996 but were forced to withdraw in the next two editions (1998, 2000) due to the civil war.

6. Nigeria won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and Rashidi Yekini was the best scorer.

7. Sierra Leone cancelled all football activities due to the Ebola virus epidemic in 2014.

11. In 2018, the Sierra Leone Football Association was suspended by FIFA and the Leone Stars were excluded from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification.

12. Sierra Leone highest FIFA World ranking is 50th position in 2014 while their lowest ranking was 172 in 2007. The Leone Stars currently rank 120th as at October 22, 2020.
