Laporta Becomes Barcelona President For Second Time

Joan Laporta has been named Barcelona president after he beat competitions from Victor Font and Toni Freixa to emerge winner of the club’s election on Sunday.

The ex-president returns to the role that he had held from 2003 until 2010, having obtained 54.28 percent of the votes, totalling 30,184 of the club’s members. His reign will run until 2026.

Laporta becomes the 42nd president in Barcelona’s history, having started the campaign as favourite to win.

He polled 9,265 to Font’s 4,431 and Freixa’s 2,634 and in June 2003, Laporta received 52.6 percent of the votes to win, with 27,138 people voting for him.

For the first time ever, voting took place across as many as six different locations, with 20,000 people participating in postal votes.

Laporta’s newly elected board will take office within ten calendar days.
