Dessers Fires Five Goals In Genk’s Friendly Win Vs Westerlo

Belgian-born Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers has proved his qualities again by netting five goals to help Racing Genk thrash Westerlo 5-1 in a friendly on Tuesday.

According to, coach John van den Brom used the friendly to hand match minutes to some fringe players in the squad before the trip to Antwerp on Saturday, April 17.

Dessers who was the highest goalscorer last season, has struggled for form in the Belgian First Division A this season.

As a result, the former Heracles Almelo player was not considered for the Super Eagles last four Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches after losing his goalscoring touch at Genk.

He also found it difficult to get playing time at Genk as John van den Brom favoured current highest goalscorer Paul Onuachu in the strikers’ pecking order.

Dessers last start in the league was against KAS Eupen 165 days ago, while he has made 22 appearances off the bench.

Dessers has managed four goals and provided three assists in 29 appearances for the 2020/2021 season.

His latest superb goalscoring form against Westerlo will be a reminder to Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr of his qualities ahead of the Word Cup qualifiers in June.

Meanwhile, Rohr is expected to announce his squad list for the World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Central African Republic within the next one month.
